From One Courgette to a World of Learning 🌱
Sometimes the best learning opportunities begin with the simplest things — and this one started with a very impressive courgette!
One of our Full Moon children proudly brought a courgette into nursery that they had been growing at home. Rather than simply looking at it, our children’s natural curiosity quickly took the learning in all sorts of directions.
They talked about its enormous size, explored where courgettes come from and discussed how fruit and vegetables can be grown on farms, in gardens and at home.
The children then began preparing and cutting the courgette, giving them opportunities to explore its different textures, investigate what was inside and develop their independence and practical skills.
And then came another very important question…
Could Hector the snail eat courgette too? 🐌
Instead of simply giving the children the answer, our Early Years Professionals supported them to research it and find out for themselves. Once they discovered that Hector could enjoy courgette, he was treated to some too!
What began with one child sharing something from home became an opportunity for discussion, research, problem-solving, practical skills, understanding the natural world and learning together.
It is a wonderful example of why we value child-led learning at Banana Moon Dyce. By listening to children's questions, interests and experiences, our Early Years Professionals can extend learning naturally and meaningfully.
It also shows how valuable those connections between home and nursery can be. Something a child was proud of at home became something their friends could investigate, explore and learn from too.
And judging by the size of that courgette, we think we may have a future expert gardener in our Full Moons! 🌱💛
