Curiosity in Action: Exploring Nature in Full Moons
At Banana Moon Dyce, some of the richest learning begins with something very simple — something interesting to investigate.
Our Full Moons recently spent time exploring a collection of natural materials including conkers, leaves and branches. Alongside these, practitioners introduced tools such as magnifying glasses, tweezers and rolling pins, creating an invitation for the children to investigate in different ways.
The children looked closely at the materials, used tweezers to pick up and examine smaller pieces and experimented with rolling pins to discover what was hiding inside the conkers.
What we love about experiences like this is that there doesn't need to be one set outcome.
Children have the freedom to notice something that interests them, try an idea, discover what happens and decide what they would like to explore next. Practitioners are there alongside them — introducing language and ideas, offering support when needed and knowing when to give children the time and space to investigate for themselves.
Through seemingly simple moments, children have opportunities to develop concentration, coordination, problem-solving and early scientific thinking as they observe, compare and explore cause and effect.
This is an important part of our approach at Banana Moon Dyce. We create environments and experiences that encourage curiosity and give children meaningful opportunities to learn through play.
Because sometimes an ordinary conker can lead to a whole lot of discovery. 🌰
