Last Thursday, members of our Banana Moon team had the opportunity to take part in an insightful Neuro-Affirming Practice training session with SensationALL, continuing to build their knowledge and understanding of how we can best support the individual needs of the children in our care.
The session explored neurodiversity and what it means to truly “see the child and support what you see”, looking beyond labels and focusing instead on each child's individual strengths, needs and experiences.
Our team explored sensory processing, the nervous system, emotional regulation and co-regulation, as well as how a child's behaviour can often be a form of communication. A particularly powerful focus was the importance of connection before correction and recognising that children need to feel safe and regulated before they are able to fully engage, learn and process what is happening around them.
The training also gave our practitioners practical strategies that can be taken back into our nursery environments, from considering sensory needs and creating supportive spaces to using movement, communication, predictability and our own calm presence to help children regulate.
Continuous professional development is incredibly important to us. Taking the time to learn, reflect and challenge the way we think helps us continue developing our practice and ensures that the care we provide responds to the children in front of us.
A huge thank you to SensationALL and Rebekah Moorhouse for such an engaging and thought-provoking session, and to our team members who took part and embraced the opportunity to continue learning.
Because when we understand the child behind the behaviour, we can respond with greater understanding, connection and compassion.
