Starting Primary 1 is an exciting milestone for children and their families, and at Banana Moon Dyce, we recognise the importance of working together to support a positive and confident transition to school.
Following feedback from one of our families, we organised a special Primary 1 Transition Morning for our preschool children and their parents. Families had expressed an interest in having the opportunity to meet others who were also preparing for the move to school, particularly those whose children may be attending the same primary schools.
The morning created a relaxed and welcoming opportunity for children and families to spend time together, make connections and begin conversations about the next stage of their journey.
Around the nursery, we created dedicated stations representing the different local primary schools our children will be attending. Families could explore information about each school, look through story books and photographs, see examples of school uniforms and talk together about what starting Primary 1 might be like.
These experiences helped make the transition to school more familiar and meaningful for the children, encouraging questions, conversations and excitement about the changes ahead.
Families also worked alongside their children to complete our "Passport to School" document. This provides an opportunity to capture valuable information about each child's interests, strengths, personality and individual needs. The documents can then support conversations with Primary 1 teachers when they visit the nursery, helping to promote continuity and a well-informed transition between nursery and school.
The morning also provided an important opportunity for parents and carers to meet one another, share experiences and begin building connections with families whose children may be attending the same schools.
Listening and responding to feedback from our families is an important part of our practice at Banana Moon Dyce. By working in partnership with parents, children and local schools, we can create meaningful opportunities that respond to the needs of our nursery community.
It was wonderful to see children and families exploring the next stage of their journeys together, and we look forward to continuing to support our preschool children as they prepare for their exciting move to Primary 1.
