What Does Learning Through Play Really Look Like?
At Banana Moon Dyce, learning through play is at the heart of our everyday practice. But what does that actually look like?
It doesn't mean that children are simply given toys and left to play. Behind the experiences and environments within our nursery is a team of practitioners who understand how children learn and develop, observe what interests them and think carefully about what could support their learning next.
Sometimes learning might look like a baby reaching towards something that has caught their attention. It might be a toddler repeatedly filling and emptying a container, or a preschool child investigating natural materials, using tools or working together with friends to solve a problem.
Each of these moments can look very different, but they all have something in common — the child is actively involved in their own learning.
Our practitioners create opportunities for children to explore, make choices, revisit ideas and develop their confidence at their own pace. They know when to join the play, introduce new language or resources, offer a little support and, just as importantly, when to stand back and allow a child time to work something out for themselves.
This means there doesn't always need to be a finished product or for every child to take part in exactly the same way.
For us, learning through play is about recognising the value in what children are already doing and creating an environment where their curiosity can continue to grow.
It's something that happens throughout every room, every age and every day at Banana Moon Dyce.
