Why We Use Real Tools in Children’s Play

At Banana Moon Dyce, we believe children are capable learners, and part of our role is giving them meaningful opportunities to develop their skills and confidence.

Sometimes that means providing resources you might not immediately expect to see in children's play.

During a recent outdoor experience, the children explored real vegetables alongside graters, child-appropriate cutting tools, pots, utensils and natural materials. Some chopped and grated carrots, while others scooped, poured, mixed and created their own ideas within the mud kitchen.

Using real tools gives an experience a genuine purpose. Children can see and feel what happens when they grate, cut, scoop or pour, adapting what they are doing as they explore.

These experiences can support developing hand strength, coordination, concentration and problem-solving, while also giving children opportunities to become increasingly independent and confident in their own abilities.

Of course, introducing real tools isn't simply about putting them out for children to use. Our practitioners consider each child's age, stage and individual abilities, providing appropriate supervision, modelling and support.

For us, learning through play is also about recognising when children are ready for a little more challenge — and trusting them with opportunities to develop their skills.
